At Holden Lane Primary School, we believe that the teaching and learning of history is essential to the development of a child’s understanding of the world around them. By providing pupils with the opportunity to explore and research the actions of people and events in the past, they are beginning to cultivate their own ideas, beliefs and values. Educational visits are incorporated within our history curriculum to reinforce pupils’ learning experiences and ensure that enrichment and achievement go hand-in-hand.

“The past happened a long time ago. We went to look at some old toys at Hanley Museum. We had to handle the toys very carefully because they were so delicate.”
Year 1
“We have been learning about Florence Nightingale. She was known as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ because she checked on people in the middle of the night to make sure they were okay. She helped hospitals to be sanitary and this helped us with Covid.”
Year 2
“Learning about history is important so that we can remember important people like the Queen. I wouldn’t want live in the Stone Age as they moved around a lot. Now we get to choose if we want to stay in one place or live somewhere like New York.”
Year 3
“History is really good because we wouldn’t know people like cave men ever existed. History tells us about the past so we can learn new things.”
Year 4
“I like to collect more knowledge about the past. I’d like to be an archaeologist when I am older so I can put artefacts back together and find out more about our history.”
Year 4
“I enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London in Year 1. I liked learning about how it happened. The bakery set on fire, and because the houses were made out of wood and built too close together, it created a domino effect.”
Year 4
“History is important because we need to learn from the past in case an event happens again. It also helps us to know how to progress in the future. If I could be a famous person in history, I would be Winston Churchill so I could lead Britain to victory.”
Year 5
“I like learning about history so we know what has happened before and what we should not do again. History lessons are fun, innovative and they provide us with opportunities to consider different world views.”
