National Curriculum

At our school, we cover key stages 1 and 2 of the current national curriculum for England. This includes:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Design and technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and design
  • Music
  • Physical education (PE), including swimming (in Year 6)
  • Computing
  • Modern foreign languages (we learn Spanish / nos aprendemos Español !)

Reading and Phonics Schemes

At Holden Lane Primary School, we do not just use one reading scheme. The children have a broad appreciation of books through various reading schemes such as Oxford Reading Tree, Oxford Tree Tops, Rigby Rocket, Rigby Star, Project X Phonics, Ginn New Reading 360 and Heinemann Rapid Readers. They also have access to high quality books within their class libraries and as part of their Creative Curriculum topics.

As part of Guided Reading lessons, the children read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their skills of decoding, skimming and scanning, inference and deduction, and commenting on the use of language and authorial intent. A range of Guided Reading schemes are used, including Rigby Navigator, Project X Origins, Project X Code, Tree Tops Classics and Rigby Star.


Our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) programme covers a broad range of topics to give children the knowledge and understanding they need to manage their own lives, including how to stay healthy, how to stay safe, self-respect, and sex education.

All subject areas covered take into account the maturity of the individual child, and parents can request to withdraw their child from the sex education element of this curriculum. Please ask to speak with your child’s teacher in the first instance.

Religious and Cultural Education

Religious education is a compulsory part of the curriculum and an emphasis is placed on Christianity, though other religions and beliefs are studied to encourage an understanding of the diversity and richness of other cultures. We hope that our children will develop their own values and beliefs, whilst maintaining respect and appreciation for those of other people.

Collective worship takes place during our school assemblies; however parents can request for their child to be withdrawn following discussion with the Headteacher so alternative arrangements can be made.
